This time I constructed my own wig with two 16 inch bundles and a 12 inch lace closure. I'm back to lace closures permanently because they are lower maintenance and way better for everyday wear in comparison to frontals. This time I got a bigger closure; regular closures are 4" x 4" and I got a 5" x 5" closure. I bleached the knots on the closure and also tinted the lace with black tea to match my scalp. If you've never tinted your closure, try it... it makes a difference!

I straightened the hair (not bone straight) to a yaki texture, to show you the difference in volume between the natural blowout state and tamer straight state. It can get even sleeker than this.
The best thing about kinky straight hair is you do not need a gazillion bundles for a full look. I used 2 bundles and it's full. If you want a natural density 1.5 bundles is sufficient.

The kinky straight texture looks great in its natural state but even better and more glam when curled. If you're new to natural textured extensions I'd suggest you start with kinky straight because it's very low maintenance.

I've also worn kinky curly/coily hair extensions (that match my type 4 hair in its natural state). Coily extensions are great because you can blend seamlessly with no heat, but they are higher maintenance.

Have you ever tried natural textured hair extensions? What's your favorite texture? I would love to read your comments!
I love Chloe & Halle's natural locs so I wanted a similar look. There are many brands of crochet locs on the market but I really wanted locs that had a natural texture and lustre, similar to natural locs.
I got straight pre-looped crochet locs and curled them to get the look I'm going for. For the lace frontal, I bleached the knots and tinted the frontal to match my skin. I decided to make a locs wig for more versatility. It turned out great considering this is my first attempt at a custom locs wig.
I wanted to do a 4 month protective style challenge with none of my hair left out, so I finally got one. I decided to get a lace frontal wig cap because all you have to do is sew in your bundles and viola you're done!

I decided to try a Light Yaki texture which resembles relaxed hair. I got a 12" lace frontal wig cap and 3 bundles of 12" Light Yaki Hair. The bundles were black and the hair on the lace frontal was brown so I had to dye it. I also bleached the knots on the lace frontal.
Pros of lace frontal wig cap

Wig making is easy and faster.

Cons of lace frontal wig cap

1) Size; it was too big for my head so I cut a part off on both sides of my ears so it fits better.
2) Less parting room unlike a regular lace frontal.

Styling my Frontal
The first day I wore my lace frontal wig I was so conscious because I felt everyone could see the line of demarcation. With time, I became better at applying the lace frontal using Got2b Ultra Glued and the blasting freeze spray.

The gel makes your wig lay flat. I have an elastic band attached to my wig but with that alone, it doesn't lay as flat. I recommend using Got2b gel, unless your frontal is sewn down. This gel is truly the lace frontal savior.

Got2b Gel Claims

1) You get up to 3 days hold with this gel and spray. This is kind of true. Using both the gel and freeze spray I got several days hold but I had to do small touch ups on some areas of my frontal. This claim only holds true if you keep water away from your hairline.

2)You need both the gel and the spray. No! The gel on its own provides good hold but using the gel + spray gives a stronger hold. I do not recommend wearing this for days on end without washing it off. I only use the gel+freeze spray together on special occasions or when I go on an overnight trip.

How I apply Got2b Gel + Freeze Spray

I apply a thin layer of the gel on my hairline (optional: followed by the freeze spray). I wait for a minute then I apply my wig (optional: you can use a blow dryer to make it stickier, but I don't). Try not to touch the gel with your fingers, I use the back of a comb to press the lace down into the gel. Finally, I tie it down with a satin scarf. The key to getting it to stick is to TIE IT DOWN for at least 10-15 mins.

The Truth about Got2b Ultra Glued Gel

Applying and washing off the gel daily is messy and leaves a residue on the lace.

The gel is not waterproof, so if you work out, sweat or it rains your frontal will lift. The gel is better suited for a cooler climate. It will not hold in summer and I don't recommend it for vacation if you intend on swimming or visit somewhere tropical.

The gel is clear but if you use too much, it can appear shiny and the freeze spray can leave a white residue if you use too much.

The Truth about Lace Frontals

Lace frontals look flawless on instagram pictures and YouTube videos, but in reality you have to put in ALOT of work to hide the line of demarcation.

Frontals are high maintenance & better for special occasions not everyday wear. Lace closures are much more low maintenance and suitable for every day wear.

You need some baby hair to hide the line of demarcation.

After wearing kinky straight clip ins daily for 5 months, I had to add kinky curly/coily clip ins to my collection. Clip ins have helped make my natural hair journey more blissful. With natural hair clip ins, I can experiment and do things to them that I would never do to my hair e.g. color, applying excessive heat etc.

I have multitextured type 4 hair (4a/4b in my crown, 4b in the middle, 4c on my sides and nape). I got only one set of clip ins. Before you separate your clip ins make sure you wet them and co-wash with a moisturizing conditioner. NEVER try to separate, comb or attempt to detangle curly hair when it's dry.
Now I'm newly natural, my fear of heat is magnified because I don't want heat damage on the part of my hair I leave out.

So although my transitioning hair blended flawlessly with kinky straight extensions without heat, the far along I go on my journey the thicker my new growth is and it doesn't blend as seamlessly. So I've had to find ways to blend my hair without using heat. I wouldn't say the blending is 100% seamless but it's good enough.

Method 1 - African Threading
Section your hair, wrap the thread around your hair. The closer you wrap, the more stretched your hair will be. I have worn this hair everyday for 2 weeks. The two pictures were taken a week apart.

Week 1: How my hair blends with the hair when it is freshly washed and air dried.

Week 2: How the hair looked later on in the second week. On that day I brushed the my hair with a paddle brush. It was a rainy, windy day so my own hair got a little poofy but even then it still blended quite well.

Week 2

Method 2 - Flat Twists

When I don't thread my hair. I do a flat twist on each side of my head and pin it back. This is my go-to hairstyle; easy, fast and great for rainy days when you know your hair will poof and frizz.

I take my clip ins out everyday. I've only slept in them once (during an overnight trip). If you're going to sleep in them I suggest you un-clip the clips closest to your edges to avoid tension while you sleep.

I'm in love with this hair. The older it gets the more natural it looks. It's low maintenance, minimal shedding and tangling.

No one has asked me if I am wearing a weave, they all think it's my hair. If you're transitioning or natural, and looking for a texture that is easy to blend with your hair, this is the texture for you.

Please note: All pictures were taken on casual days when I was on holiday from college. If I had a special occasion to attend, then I'll obviously style my hair more. Curl my clips ins, apply some edge control to my edges etc.
Posh Pearlshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13193915872585032755noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2831725528410871718.post-50070319592732001772016-05-21T10:17:00.001-07:002021-01-05T04:24:35.233-08:00Kinky Straight Clip in Extensions for Natural HairMy love affair with Kinky Straight Hair Extensions started 2 years ago with my Kinky Straight Lace Front Wig . Since then no other texture compares. It blended perfectly with my hair when I was transitioning with no heat. I just did my big chop 2 weeks ago after transitioning for 1 year and 2 months so I'm now 100% percent natural. I'll probably have to blow dry my hair for it to blend flawlessly now.

This is my first time trying clip ins. I watched many Youtube videos on clip ins for natural hair and I finally took the plunge. I got kinky straight extensions in 14 inches. This texture resembles natural hair when it is blow dried aka blown out.

I'll have to dye the hair to a 1b color because it is a dark brown color. One fear I had with clip ins is that the clips would snag and get caught up in my hair. If you take your time putting them in and taking them out they do not snag.

I got one set of clip ins which had 8 pieces and it gives me a natural density which I like.

I know some people hate the crimps. I left the hair to air dry after washing it. To get rid of the crimps, instead of letting it air dry, blow dry. If you want more sleekness, follow with a flat iron.

If you want this texture check out companies like Big Chop Hair, Kinky Curly Yaki, My Natural Hair Extensions, Her Given Hair etc.

Next post will be my an initial review and how to blend your hair without heat.
My final review on the alumine products I used is that they are really good. I give them two thumbs up! My reasons are that my hair was soft and tangle free throughout the week. I did not have to apply argan oil to moisturize my hair at all. My morning routine is simple, i wet my hair run it through my hair and scrunch and I am done. At night i simply sleep with my hair in a pineapple. I wash my hair every Sunday.

The flip over method only works if you can blend your hair or are willing to use a lot of heat to blend your hair with the extensions seamlessly. As for the extensions itself, I absolutely love it, it is low maintenance but next time I will install with a lace closure. Since I am going natural (I am currently almost 1 year post relaxer) I have decided I will only wear silky textured extensions with a closure or I may stop wearing silky textured extensions all together.. we'll have to wait and see.
I had to turn the lace front wigs I have purchased in the past, into u-part wigs and wear my own leave out to make them look believable. But my opinion on lace front wigs may soon change...I was on YouTube a few weeks ago and I saw a video that caught my interest, see for yourself:

I have worn lace closures in the past and I love them. The difference between a lace frontal and a lace closure is that a lace frontal covers the entire front of your head from ear to ear. It is supposed to offer more versatile styling options, so you will be able to wear your hair in a ponytail with no hair left out. I have never considered one until now because most people apply it with glue and once I see or hear the word glue , i am OUT!! It is good to know that it can look somewhat realistic without glue. This is also a great protective styling option.

My thought is that if I make the wig myself with my own frontal I will like it better than the lace front wigs I have purchased in the past. I am seriously considering purchasing a lace frontal once I am done wearing protective styles. If or when I do I will do a detailed review on my purchase to let you know if the lace frontal lives up to the hype.
Lace front wigs were replaced by the popularity of U-Part wigs, Lace closure full wigs and Flip over wigs but I lace frontals may become a trend, we'll have to wait and see...
What is your opinion on lace frontals?Posh Pearlshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13193915872585032755noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2831725528410871718.post-34040739987171569312015-03-14T03:58:00.004-07:002021-01-05T04:32:56.606-08:00DIY Protective Styles : Marley Hair vs. Yarn Twists vs. Box Braids

I've been wearing protective styles since August 2014. I've worn crochet braids with Marley hair, yarn twists and box braids; I did all these styles on myself for the first time. I normally pay to get them done but I'm enjoying the process of doing my own hair.

Crochet Braids with Marley Hair

I used 2 packs in a color 1B. I cut the hair in half. Kept this style for a month and a half.

Pros: Versatile styling, no hair left out.
Cons: Hair is very dry (I used a cream moisturizer to soften it). It's a hassle curling it while it's on your head because you have to dip it in hot water (I burnt my fingers a few times). If you want this style it's better to make a crochet wig.

Yarn Twists (My favorite protective style, so far)

I used 100% acrylic yarn (7-9 strands per twist). Kept this style in for a month.
Pros: Cheaper than braiding hair, easy to put in, take out. I experienced less breakage than box braids.
Cons: Burning the tips & heavier than box braids (especially when wet).
Box Braids

I used 2 packs of Xpression braiding hair in a Color 2. I am currently wearing this style, I plan to wear it for 2 months.

Pros: Lasts for a long time, low maintenance & versatile styling

Cons: Takes a long time to put them in and take them out. More breakage than yarn twists.

CONS

It sheds A LOT... clumps of hair come out at a time especially when washed.

It tangles. Best way to minimize the tangling is do regular deep conditions.

PROS

I NEVER had to apply heat to my leave out to blend. Easiest blending ever!! I have type 4 natural hair (I was 9 months post relaxer in April).

Holds curls well, when it is curled in its natural state.

Really versatile!! You can do so much with this hair styling wise.

I wore this hair curled 95% of the time. Unfortunately I didn't flat iron it because I didn't have the patience. I apologize for the lackluster pictures, I promise to up my picture game in future posts.
My final verdict is that this was a good tester unit to try this texture out without having to splurge. This texture is going on my list of must have hair extensions due to how effortlessly it blends with my own hair. You'll not understand the hype about kinky straight textured hair extensions until you try it for yourself. I'll be investing in some wefts for sure. If I can find kinky straight, coarse yaki or italian yaki wefts with minimal shedding and tangling.. my hair life would be made!!

I apply a few drops of serum after cowashing as a leave in conditioner. I prefer applying serums to wet hair and air drying. The only time I apply a drop of serum to dry hair is after I flat iron, curl or blow dry.
I didn't do any blending or styling, the picture shows the wig in its natural unaltered glory. My first impressions are that; I feel it's too much hair and it overwhelms my face. I also wish I bought a 14 or 16 inch, I didn't expect the 18 inches to be so long. It's a lot of hair y'all!!!

PROS

Beautiful texture. Matches my own hair perfectly (I'm 6 months post relaxer).

Color matches my own hair. Also the color didn't run excessively when I shampooed & conditioned the wig.

True to length.

True to the picture on aliexpress.

CONS

It shed excessively when I washed it. It sheds when you finger comb. It sheds a lot!

The wig is too thick especially around the hairline.

Now my issue is I don't know how to thin or layer wigs. I'll be on YouTube all day today, trying to find some helpful tips.

Hope I can successfully thin and layer it without ruining it. Fingers crossed*

Communication with them was satisfactory, I made a request for a lighter density because I did not want the normal 130% density and also asked for combs. Only one of my requests was granted; the wig came with combs but they sent me 130% density. I am overwhelmed by this hair.. it is way too full.

First impressions before shampooing and conditioning the wig

It has a strong processed smell.

It is true to length.

It is quite soft. I like the texture, it really looks like blown out African American Hair. I am also happy I got a Color 1, it is the same color as my own hair.

It is way too full and definitely not wearable out of the pack. I have no experience thinning out or layering wigs so I am very worried.

It has about 3 inch lace parting in front. When you part the wig, the part is not very visible because of how dense it is, so i will need to tweeze the part.

After I took pictures, I wet it and once the hair got wet it tangled. When shampooing, I used my fingers to distribute the shampoo throughout, it shed a lot. After I rinsed off the shampoo, applied a moisturizing conditioner and used a wide tooth comb to comb through, clumps of hair came out. Things are off to a rough start with this wig. I am going to deep condition it overnight and rinse the conditioner off in the morning.

I should have a new post of me wearing the wig in the next few days. If you have any other questions about the wig, please post them in the comment section below.

Fast forward 3 years later...ask me why I just purchased a new lace front wig?! Well I really want to invest in hair extensions that resemble Natural African American hair but good quality wefted hair in this texture is quite the investment. So I figured a more affordable purchase would allow me decide if this texture is worth the splurge. This is my first aliexpress hair purchase.
My Wig Specs

Color 1

3 inch lace front parting

Medium Cap

Medium Brown Lace

130% Density

The density is one thing I am really concerned about because I have no experience thinning out wigs. I requested a lighter density and I hope they grant my request *fingers crossed* 130% density is way too much for this texture imo.

If you live in the US then lucky you because you are spoiled for choice when it comes to hair products and you can find most products at Walmart, Walgreens etc.

What I have done for the past 4 years is do a huge product haul once a year on www.gmbshair.com
I found two Canadian beauty supply stores www.hairmall.ca and www.beautifulblackhair.ca The prices on
www.hairmall.ca are reasonable provided you purchase a minimum of $75.99 before tax and qualify for free shipping. My order was shipped out fast and I received it in 5 Business Days. But if you intend to purchase only one or two products then www.beautifulblackhair.ca is a better choice because they offer free regular shipping to anywhere in Canada.

I bought a lot of products (most of them are for use on my own hair) but here are two products that I will be featuring on my blog:
So I put together a list of my Top YouTube Hair Gurus. There are so many more amazing people you can subscribe to on YouTube but I picked the five below because I learn new things from them and I'm all about expanding my knowledge.

1) Peakmill
My favorite person on YouTube hands down!!. In my mind we are friends :p She's super talented, as in there is nothing this girl cannot do. She is daring and experiments with a lot of different styles, colors etc. regardless her hair is always flawless. Her reviews are honest and her tutorials are detailed, easy to follow and understand. She inspired me to start making my own U-Part / Full Wigs.

2) Ivy Powell
Every time I watch ivy's hair tutorials I learn something new. She's very innovative and comes up with a lot of new ways to do sew ins, closures etc. She's worn some of the most amazing curly textures I've ever seen. She is the queen of curly hair!!

3) Fabulasityisme
Absolutely love her channel. She makes any hair look good. She wears the hair, the hair doesn't wear her. Her hair tutorials are easy to follow too.

4) LakiaStar
Her channel offers a lot of variety. She experiments with different textures, hairstyles, colors etc. so there is something for everyone.

5) Tiarra Monet
She wears a lot of different styles and comes up with new things and her tutorials are detailed and very helpful.

Food for thought: I'm more into hair than makeup so I judged solely on hair tutorials & reviews. Please do your own research before purchasing from any company. If your favorite guru gives a certain hair company rave reviews, that doesn't guarantee that when you buy the hair, you'll have the same experience.

Posh Pearlshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13193915872585032755noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2831725528410871718.post-26497934174408522402013-09-24T23:47:00.004-07:002013-11-07T22:41:07.606-08:00Craving Curls For Fall I have serious commitment issues when it comes to purchasing hair; which is why I haven't purchased new hair in 2013. Curly hair has been on my wishlist all year but the weather is getting colder and I hear curly hair is harder to maintain during colder months. My hair motto is "when in doubt, get body wave hair", but as much as I like the low maintenance aspect of body wave hair, it would not satisfy my current curl craving.
I saw the gorgeous Fabulasityisme on Youtube wearing a wavy curly texture..!!This texture will definitely give me my curly hair fix and doesn't look too high maintenance.

Other things on my wishlist:

1) Blow Dryer with a Diffuser attachment
Can you believe I haven't used a blow dryer in over 7 years?! Not even on my own natural hair. I am very anti-heat. But now I want one with a diffuser attachment because it gives you frizz free defined curls/waves.

2) 3 Part Lace Closure
I need to try this closure out to find out if the days of having to physically move my wig to change my part are over.

3) Edge Control
How am I about to start using edge control in 2013? This is supposed to be a staple in your hair product collection. We all know your hair isn't laid unless your edges are.

My show and tell is coming up soonish.. PROMISE!!
My ideal edge control product would be moisturizing, leave no residue and provide good hold all day long. I understand everyone's hair is different and what works well for some may not work well for others. There are so many edge control products on the market but I managed to narrow it down to four after watching a ton of reviews on YouTube.

One word... GENIUS!!

I wanted to share this method with you because I know that some people are still hesitant about trying a lace closure because they feel it will not look natural. I was going to try the Flip over method for my next install but instead I will attempt this method. If you haven't tried a 3/4 wig you have to, trust me you will not go back to regular sew ins, at least I haven't and it has been more than 2 years.

As you know I am rocking my Virgin Mongolian Kinky Curly Hair and loving every minute of it but I am going on vacation soon and I want longer curly hair. I am leaning towards a texture like this:

Will keep you updated :)
I spend about 5-10 mins on my hair every day. I tried to do different things with the hair e.g. twist outs, high bun, etc to show you how versatile it really is.

Saturday: Wet, finger comb and Go. Big Hair, Don't Care :)

Sunday: I wet my hair with water and brushed it out with a Denman brush and applied argan oil. I expected more curl definition but I guess the brush I bought from Sally's is the volumizing brush because it made the hair voluminous and stretched out the curls.

Monday : To get this look, on Sunday night, I wet my hair, combed with a wide tooth comb and used virgin coconut oil + proclaim aloe vera gel to do 8 chunky twists. On Monday morning, I loosened the twists. Not bad for a first try!!

Tuesday: I also rocked this chunky twist out look.
Don't be afraid to experiment with your Virgin Hair Extensions and try different looks.
I started wearing it again at the beginning of May.

I did not remake my wig.. <strike>because I was lazy</strike>, all I did was shampoo & deep condition the wig. I put the wig in a plastic bag for 3 hours, after 3 hours I finger detangled, combed through with a wide tooth comb (starting from the tips and working my way to the roots), rinsed with cold water and Viola it was good to go!

I wear this hair in two ways depending on what look I want: without products or I spray it with a mixture of water and conditioner, apply Argan Oil and scrunch for more curl definition.

I love this hair!! It looks so natural and although I am 2 months post relaxer, I leave a tiny bit of my edges out in front and it blends fairly well. So if you're natural, it will look like it is growing from your scalp. It's so soft and has a lot of movement. Perfect spring/summer hair!!

Why I love this hair?

It looks very natural. I get so many compliments and people actually think it is my hair.

It's very soft. Manageable shedding and tangling.

Easy to blend relaxed hair if you have very minimal leave out. Versatile styling options.

The curls look good even without the use of a curl defining product.

Three Tips to keep your Kinky Curly Hair looking Fabulous

1) Co-wash often.
2) Spritz with water + conditioner every morning, apply Argan Oil and scrunch.
3) Most important: Do not finger comb or manipulate it in any way when it is drying or dry. If you do, your hair will get frizzy. Let it be and it will look fabulous all day.

What I did that I don't recommend?
Do not split your wefts. I feel splitting your wefts makes the wefts weaker and leads to more shedding so I will not do this ever again!

What's next?
Although the curls look amazing even without the use of a curl defining cream. I'm looking to buy a curl defining cream but there are not many options where I live so I'll be ordering from eBay or Amazon. I intend to purchase a Denman brush and a diffuser. I want to try so many different looks with this hair e.g. twistouts, braidouts etc

Which look do you prefer? With products or without? Also, if you know any curl defining creams you would recommend, please do so in the comment section.

P.S: I used two bundles; 16 and 18 inches.

This was the first time I ever contemplated trying the look. Summer is the best time to experiment with your hair and I am trying to push myself out of my comfort zone with my hairstyle choices. What I like most about this trend is that since the roots are dark, it tones down the bolder color on the rest of the hair; makes it more wearable.
The look has been seen on Ciara, Nicki Minaj and Keke Palmer to name a few.

Rihanna's look is by far my favorite. I like her color combination better; it goes from dark brown at the roots to a auburn honey blonde color. Nicki's hair looks good on her but not everyone can pull that color off at least i know i certainly can't and will not attempt to.

What do you think of this trend? Would you wear it?
I like this length especially for spring /summer.

I am obsessed with Keke Palmer's current hairstyle. I need and I want NOW!! I like the texture, length and fullness.

I also like Jada Pinkett's current hairstyle. I think this look can be achieved with any type of virgin body wave hair e.g. Brazilian, Malaysian, Peruvian etc.

Spring is almost here and I plan to put my Virgin Mongolian Kinky hair back in sometime in the coming months.
I haven't purchased new hair in 2013 which is so unlike me. I have enjoyed wearing my Virgin Filipino Hair. and it will be a tough act to follow. I think that every time you purchase new hair, it should be better than your last purchase since you learn a lot with each type of hair. I cannot wait for find the hair that would give my Virgin Filipino Hair a run for it's money :p

I can honestly say now that I decided to transition for the wrong reasons. I saw others doing it, I love the way natural hair looks and I wanted to be on #teamnatural. But I have decided transitioning is not for me and that is perfectly fine. I felt like a failure at first because I have heard fairy tale transitioning stories and I wanted that for myself but it did not happen.

Almost a year into transitioning , I was so frustrated with trying to take care of two different textures. Transitioning is a very emotional process and it took a toll on me. One day I decided after a lot of tears, I was at my wits end and I decided to relax my hair thinking that would instantly solve my problem and boy was I wrong. My hair was breaking excessively especially at the ends and chunks of hair would come out each time I attempted to moisturize my hair or touch my hair.

Right now I have a strict hair regimen. I also bought something I have always wanted; a heat cap. The advantage of a heat cap is that it helps infuse conditioners deeper into cuticles. I love wearing extensions but I love wearing extensions knowing that my own hair is in great condition. I am on my way back to having hair that I can be proud of like I once was. No matter how bad the condition of your own hair is, know that you can always restore health to your hair. It takes time and diligence but it is possible :)
I know I have said I am not a big fan of straight hair numerous times but my Virgin Filipino Hair changed my opinion of straight hair. The main reasons why I now love straight hair is that it is versatile and low maintenance.
The process of straightening wavy hair is tedious and I simply do not have the patience for it so I always wear my wavy hair in its natural state or I add more curls with a curling wand. I would prefer hair that is straight that I can curl when I want.
For Christmas. I either want a full bang hairstyle or a sleek straight style with my own leave out.

Full Bang Hairstyle
I am not 100% sold on this style is because I know I will not last up to a week with bangs in my face like 24/7. Also since it is Christmas and there are a lot of events to attend while visiting family and friends, I am not sure this hairstyle will work for me for every single event. On the other hand, I am open to trying a new look.

Sleek Straight Style
This hairstyle is chic and always in style. I have a round face so it will make my face look a little slimmer.. I hope!!! I am leaning more towards this style, I haven't decided if I will leave some of my hair out or use a lace closure. But I will probably leave my own hair out because I want to be able to put my hair up in really high buns.
